Practice Exercise (Optional)

  • Place a beam system on Level 2 using the Level 2 - Structural plan view.
    • Open the Level 2 - Structural plan view.
    • Open the Beam System tool.
    • Set the beam system properties in the Properties palette to:
      • Layout Rule: Fixed Distance
      • Fixed Spacing: 6’ 0
      • Justification: Center
      • Beam Type: W Shape: 8x10
    • Set the beam system placement height using the Elevation property.
      • To place the beam system below the structural floor, enter a negative value that drops the beams below the thickness of the floor.
      • For the 3” LW Concrete on 2” Metal Deck -- a common floor type for steel frame buildings - enter -0’ 5”.
    • Sketch the boundary for the beam system:
      • Choose the Sketch Beam System mode.
      • Use the Pick Supports tool to pick 4 beams that surround a column bay.
      • The first beam picked will determine the direction of the beam system.
      • Click the Finish checkmark to complete the beam system.
  • Select the beam system that you just placed, and try editing it’s properties:
    • Set the beam system properties in the Properties palette to:
      • Layout Rule: Fixed Distance
      • Fixed Spacing: 4’ 0”
      • Justification: Center
      • Beam Type: K-Series Bar Joist-Rod Web : 14K4
    • Try alternate layout rules, spacings, and justifications and observe how these setting affect the way beams are placed within the beam system boundary.
  • Place additional beam systems on Level 2 using the Automatic Beam System placement mode.
    • Open the Level 2 - Structural plan view.
    • Open the Beam System tool.
    • Set the beam system properties in the Properties palette to:
      • Layout Rule: Fixed Distance
      • Fixed Spacing: 4’ 0
      • Justification: Center
      • Beam Type: K-Series Bar Joist-Rod Web : 14K4
    • Set the beam system placement height using the Elevation property to 0’ 5”.
    • Hover over the beams that bound an adjacent column bay and note how Revit previews the layout of beam system that can be automatically created for you. The direction of the beam that you hover over determines the direction of the beams in the beam system.
    • Click on one of the beams that bound the column bay to automatically create the beam system.
  • Try placing a few additional beam systems on Level 2 using a 3D view.
    • Open the 3D - Structural view.
    • Open the Beam System tool.
    • Use the Set Work Plane tool to choose Level 2 as the work plane for placing the beams in this beam system.
    • Set the beam system properties in the Properties palette to:
      • Layout Rule: Fixed Distance
      • Fixed Spacing: 4’ 0”
      • Justification: Center
      • Beam Type: K-Series Bar Joist-Rod Web : 14K4
    • Set the beam system placement height using the Elevation property to 0’ 5”.
    • Pick the beams that form the boundary for the beam system:
      • Use the Pick Supports tool to pick 4 beams that surround a column bay.
      • The first beam picked will determine the direction of the beam system.
      • Click the Finish checkmark to complete the beam system.
  • Switch to the 3D - Structural View to confirm the beam system placement locations.
    • Verify that the beam systems are all placed at Level with an elevation of 0’ 5”.
    • Adjust a beam system’s work plane or Elevation properties if needed.

When you have completed this exercise, your model should look like this:
