Example: Creating a Parametric Box

Video

Here’s a great tutorial created by DCO Parametric that demonstrates the steps for creating a parametric box using Grasshopper.

Steps

‣
Model the box walls.
  • Create a Rectangle and offset it to specify the base of the walls.
  • Create a Boundary Surface using the inner and outer curves.
  • Extrude the Boundary Surface to the desired height to create the box walls.
‣
Model the box bottom.
  • Create a Boundary Surface using the inner curves.
  • Extrude it to create the box bottom.
‣
Join the box walls and bottom into a single solid.
  • Create a Solid Union that joins the box walls and the box bottom into a single solid.
  • Merge all faces to remove the creases.
‣
Model the box lid.
  • Move the base outer rectangle up to the top of the box walls.
  • Offset the curve to create a tolerance gap for the lid to fit over the walls. This will be the inner surface of the lid.
  • Offset the curve specifying the lid’s inner surface to create a new curve specifying the outer surface.
  • Create a Boundary Surface, and extrude it down to create the lid sides around the box.
  • Select the outer lid edge curve, and create a Boundary Surface.
  • Extrude it up to create the lid top.
‣
Join the lid sides and top into a single solid.
  • Create a Solid Union.
  • Merge all faces.
