Installing ETABS and the CSIxRevit Connector on Your Computer

Want to install ETABS and the CSIxRevit2010 connector on your computer? Here are the steps to follow...

Connect to the CEEServer and Applications Folder
  1. If you are remotely located, connect to the Stanford campus network using the Stanford VPN Client.
  2. Connect to the applications folder on the CEEServer at this address: \\ceeserver\cee110apps
Installing ETABS version 9.5
  1. Open the \\ceeserver\cee110apps\ folder.
  2. Navigate to the Computers and Structures\ETABS9.5 Server folder.
  3. Run the Setup.exe application.
Configure Your Computer to Use the Network License Server
Part A -- Create the Required Environment Variable to Point to License Server:
  1. Open the Control Panel : System : Advanced tab.
  2. Click the Environment Variables button.
  3. Add a new variable: LSFORCEHOST
(If you are using the Windows 7 operating system, add this as a System variable to the lower pane of the dialog.)
  4. Set the value:  segmsoft.stanford.edu
Part B -- Prepare the Hosts file for modification (Windows 7 users only):

If you are using the Windows 7 operating system, you'll need to change the access privileges for the hosts file to enable you to make changes to it.  XP users can skip this step.

  1. Open the c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc folder.
  2. Right-click the hosts file and choose Properties.
  3. Switch to the Security tab in the hosts Properties dialog.
  4. Click Edit to change the file permissions.
  5. Select the Users line in the Groups or users section, then enable the Allow checkbox on the Full Control line in the permissions section.
  6. Click OK, and then confirm that you want to make this change.
  7. Click OK again to close the Properties dialog.
Part C -- Modify the Hosts file:
  1. Open the c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc folder.
  2. Open the hosts file for editing.
  3. Add a new line to the file:  171.67.81.170    segmsoft
  4. Make sure that the new line does NOT have a "#" character at the front of the line.  The "#" character comments the line out, and if it appears, that line will be ignored.
  5. Save the file to the original filename (use the File:Save command, not File:Save As...).  Make sure that it isn't saved as hosts.txt. It should be hosts with no file suffix.
Upgrading ETABS to version 9.7 (required for using the CSIxRevit exporter)
  1. Open the \\ceeserver\cee110apps\ folder.
  2. Navigate to the Computers and Structures\ETABS v9.70\ETABSV970patchfor950andup folder.
  3. Rather than running the Setup.exe program, copy all of the files in this folder (Select All, then Ctrl-C).
  4. Open the folder on your local hard disk containing the ETABS 9.5 installation.
  5. Paste in the patch files (Ctrl-V).
  6. When your computer prompts your about whether to replace existing files, confirm that it's OK to replace them.
This will overwrite many of the ETABS 9.5 files with the 9.7 updates, and when you start the ETABS application, you'll be running version 9.7.
Note:  If you've opened the ETABS 9.5 application after installing it, you'll need to restart your PC after completing step 1.  Even though you exit the ETABS 9.5 application, it hangs onto a few files until you restart, so you won't be able to copy over them.  The solution is to do a restart, and that will free up the files.
Installing the CSIxRevit exporter
  1. Make sure that the Revit Structure application is installed before proceeding.
  2. Open the \\ceeserver\cee110apps\ folder.
  3. Navigate to the Computers and Structures\CSIxRevit_ETABS_V970\CSIxRevit2010 folder.
  4. Choose the version that's right for your operating system (32-bit or 64-bit).
  5. Run the Setup.exe program.
  6. When prompted, navigate to the folder where Revit Structure 2010 is installed:  c:\Program Files\Autodesk Revit Structure 2010\Program\Revit.exe  (or something very similar ...)

If all of the files are installed properly, then you should see this in Revit Structure:
